Henderson Park update at town hall meeting

ALBANY, Ga. – The city of Albany host an important town hall meeting where residents had the opportunity to voice their opinions and hear from city leaders.

The primary focus of this meeting was to discuss the revitalization of the Henderson Park recreational facility.

Commissioner Demetrius Young, city representative for Ward 6, provided detailed information about this development.

“Well, the main purpose of the meeting is to discuss the new Henderson Park project, which we’re going to do a $8.5 million recreational development here at the current site of Henderson Gym. This is a project that has been in the works for the last few years now, and we’re ready to go forward with the design of the center and there are going to be some decisions needed to be made. So we’re going to ask the input of the community to come out and weigh in on some of the design and looks of the building,” said Demetrius Young, Ward 6, City Commissioner.

The Henderson Park Gym, long regarded as the basketball mecca of the city where numerous players began their journeys to successful careers in the sport, is set to undergo a significant transformation.

“It will also be a full service recreational center that’ll have classrooms for youth programs, it will also have indoor fitness equipment for seniors, and it’ll also be a community gathering point. So, the community will have access to this facility any time it needs to. So, we’re looking for some great developments out of it,” said Commissioner Young.

The city of Albany values it citizens’ input and plans to incorporate feedback from these meetings into future projects.

“Well, what I hope to do after this meeting is to gather the information that we have at the meeting, but also make the plans available online to see the different variations of the project and the different options that we’re going to have. That will be available online for citizens to be able to weigh in. So, when we vote on it next Tuesday, and moving the project forward, we’ll be able to have that input,” said Commissioner Young.
