AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) will hold its annual Fallen Officer Memorial this Sunday, December 7, at 9:15 a.m. on campus. The ceremony honors Officer Nicholas Smarr of the Americus Police Department and Officer Jody Smith of GSW Public Safety, who were both shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in December 2016. Smarr died the day of the incident, and Smith passed away the following morning, a tragedy that deeply affected the campus and the Americus community.
Their legacy continues at the university, where the Public Safety building now bears both of their names as a tribute to their bravery and sacrifice. The memorial ceremony will take place outside that building, serving as a moment for reflection, remembrance and community support.
The event is open to the public. Students, residents, law enforcement and community members are invited to attend and stand together in honoring the lives of two officers who gave everything in the line of duty.
