GSP Updates on Icy Road Conditions
ALBANY, Ga. – While the winter storm may be out of our area, there’s still another aspect that could pose a risk to people.
While we won’t see any more snow, the conditions of the roads is another issue.
We met with state troopers at Georgia State Patrol Post 40 to talk about how the snow and subsequent freezing temperatures can impact people’s commute.
“It definitely could get dangerous. You know, the thing is, people really aren’t used to driving on icy roads, in icy conditions like that down here. Not something that happens very often. So, definitely a potential to get dangerous,” said Trooper Don Terry, Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
Post 40, along with several local emergency management agencies are telling public if they don’t have to be out to stay off the roads.
And, while that may seem tempting to speed up if you are out, it can be dangerous.
“Make sure you leave plenty of gaps, plenty of space between your vehicle and vehicles around you. That reactionary guess has got to be bigger now on these icy roads, because if you hit the brakes, might take a little bit longer to get your vehicle stopped,” said Trooper Terry.
The concern over icy roads isn’t just limited to highways either…
As people should exercise caution on local roads too.
“Surface streets are the same thing. Any time there’s ice on top of the road, the roads are slick, a lot harder to get a vehicle to stop, a lot easier for your vehicle to slide off the road while you lose control,” said trooper Terry.
Above all else, if you do need to be outside on potentially icy roads, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.
“If it is absolutely required for you to be on the road, number one: make sure you reduce your speed. Okay? Just because the speed limit says 55 doesn’t mean we have to go 55, but it’s not safe. Slow it down. As always, make sure you wear your seatbelt. Don’t drive distracted. Don’t drive impaired…” said Trooper Terry.
