Georgia State Patrol trooper killed in crash on I-85 in Gwinnett Co. now identified

ATLANTA, Ga. – We begin tonight on a somber note from Gwinnett County, where a Georgia State Patrol officer has tragically lost his life in the line of duty.

The fallen trooper has been identified as Jimmy Cenescar. The tragic incident occurred Sunday, near the Lawrenceville-Suwanee exit.

“As a young public safety officer, he was at the beginning of a life with years of experiences and opportunities that lay ahead and a career dedicated to protecting others,” Gov. Brian Kemp said.

Trooper Jimmy Cenescar lost his life in a wreck while attempting to stop a motorcyclist for a traffic violation. A motorcyclist had been observed weaving in and out of traffic on Interstate 85 North. In the pursuit of enforcing traffic laws, Cenescar’s cruiser veered off the roadway, crashing into an embankment.

The fallen trooper was quickly rushed to Northside Gwinnett Hospital, but unfortunately, he died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Trooper Cenescar had been a dedicated member of the Georgia Department of Public Safety since January 2023, and was a graduate of the 114th Trooper School.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to Trooper Jimmy Cenescar’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
