Georgia Power urges customers vigilance against scams

ALBANY, Ga. – As the new year begins, Georgia Power, the state’s largest electric utility, is urging customers to remain vigilant against scams.

These scams often intensify during post-holiday season and as tax season approaches. Scammers frequently threaten to disconnect power unless “immediate payment” is made or attempt to steal personal information by asking customers to “update their billing details.”

In 2025, these scams have evolved, with fraudsters utilizing tactics such as requesting payments through mobile or online platforms that illegally feature the company’s logo, and running fake ads on search engines like Google to redirect customers to fraudulent websites for payments or personal information.

Scammers have also been known to use fake 800 numbers to pose as Georgia Power’s customer service line.

Georgia Power emphasizes that it does not call customers to demand immediate payment or request payment information via phone call. The company also does not accept cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, as a payment method.

Employees do not visit customers’ homes or businesses to collect payments in person or ask for payments. In the rare instance an employee needs to visit a customer, they will always wear a Georgia Power uniform, carry a photo ID badge with the company logo, and drive a vehicle marked with the company logo as well.

To protect yourself against scams, Georgia Power advises customers to verify forms of communication by directly calling the customer service line number listed on the official bill.

Georgia Power works every day to combat new and existing scams and partners with law enforcement to support efforts in identifying and prosecuting criminals who impersonate company representatives.
