GDOT: US 19 at Nelms Road traffic pattern changing in August

DOUGHERTY Co., Ga. What: Georgia Department of Transportation maintenance crews plan to begin modifying the intersection of US 19 and Nelms Road in August, which will change the traffic pattern for vehicles coming from Nelms Road.

The Department is converting the intersection to a Reduced Conflict U-Turn (RCUT). Nelms Road traffic will be required to make a right turn and travel downstream to complete a U-turn maneuver at Dorough Avenue or Broach Avenue. By restricting traffic movement, motorists have fewer ways of potentially colliding with other vehicles. Traffic movements on US 19 will not be affected.

Short-term lane closures have been in place while crews add paving to assist large trucks in making U-turns at the Dorough and Broach avenue locations. Lane closures will continue while work is underway at the US 19 and Nelms Road intersection. There may also be intermittent traffic interruptions on Nelms Road as modifications are made to the concrete islands and road striping. Motorists are reminded to slow down as they approach the work zone and remain alert for workers on site.

Where: US 19 at Nelms Road, in Putney, Dougherty County.

When: Intersection modifications that will change the Nelms Road traffic pattern are scheduled to begin Tuesday, Aug. 5, and are expected to be complete by Friday, Aug. 8, weather permitting.
