GDOT spokeswoman expands on Westover Boulevard extension project

ALBANY, Ga. – Albany’s traffic landscape is on the brink of transformation with the Westover Boulevard extension, promising enhanced travel efficiency.

In an upcoming initiative expected in January, North Westover Boulevard will undergo modifications affecting drivers and motorists. Drivers should anticipate a reduction in speed limits and lane configurations from the vicinity of the Planet Fitness on North Westover Boulevard to the Dawson Road intersection, encompassing the area near the Albany Mall.

This ongoing project, valued at 21 million dollars, underway since late 2022, encompasses two bridges and two new lanes going east and west. This aims to ease the U.S. 82/Liberty Expressway traffic over a new Westover Boulevard extension that would inevitably connect to Ledo Road.

We got a chance to speak with Juanita Birmingham, the Southwest District Communications Specialist for the Department of Transportation, who highlights the initiative’s objective to reduce congestion and increase traffic capacity on Nottingham Way… A roadway already experiencing an above-average number of accidents.

Juanita Birmingham also notes that the forthcoming extension is set to create a new direct connection between the commercial districts adjacent to the Albany Mall, Ledo Road, and the southeastern region of Lee county.

This development is strategically designed to bolster safety measures and optimize traffic efficiency.
