GDOT: Colquitt Co. intersection of State Route 37 and Thigpen Trail will become a four-way stop

MOULTRIE, Ga. Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is converting the Colquitt County intersection of State Route 37 and Thigpen Trail to a four-way stop to enhance safety.

A Georgia DOT project to install a roundabout at the intersection is still active and tentatively scheduled to be available for bid in the summer of 2026. In the interim, the Department is implementing the four-way stop to address crashes at the intersection.

Expect to see Georgia DOT workers on site Tuesday, Aug. 12, weather permitting. Work should be completed in one day. Please slow down approaching the area and give the crew a safe space to work.

The biggest change will be for SR 37 traffic, which previously did not have to stop. Here’s what drivers will see:

  • Three sets of rumble strips as drivers approach the intersection;
  • Double indicated (one on each side of the road) advanced warning signs with mounted flashing amber beacons to alert drivers of the new stop signs ahead;
  • Double indicated stop signs with mounted flashing red beacons.

New 48-inch diameter stop signs with mounted flashing red beacons will be installed on Thigpen Trail.

“Stop signs are a tool, but they rely on drivers to slow down as they approach the intersection and obey the stop signs,” Traffic Engineer Randy Rathburn said.

With the change in traffic control to this intersection, here’s a refresher for drivers when they approach a four-way stop. The vehicle that reaches the intersection first proceeds first. If two, or more, cars approach at the same time, the vehicle to the right has the right of way.
