GDOT: Calhoun Co. Rice Road closing for bridge replacement

MORGAN, Ga. – Rice Road is scheduled to close April 10 for replacement of the Falling Creek bridge in Calhoun County, part of a Georgia Department of Transportation project to replace six locally-owned bridges in four Southwest Georgia counties.

County Road (CR) 134/Rice Road is expected to be closed for approximately 150 days. The location is about six miles north of Morgan. The detour will be as follows: motorists traveling on Lower Shellman Road will continue eastbound for approximately 1.7 miles before turning right onto CR 154/Five Forks Road. Motorists will then travel approximately 7.5 miles south on CR 154/Five Forks Road, which becomes CR 149/Elam Church Road, and then continue on to CR 130/CR 134/Rice Road.

This bridge was built in 1958 and, like the other five that will be replaced, has posted weight limits. Replacement is made possible through the Design-Build Bridge Replacement Program that allows Georgia DOT to replace and update local bridges deemed structurally deficient. Bridges are “bundled” into one contract to maximize efficiency and streamline delivery during final design and construction.

The other bridges are:

  • CR 152/New Hope Road over Pachitla Creek in Randolph County, built in 1966. Anticipated completion Nov. 6, 2024.
  • CR 3/Smithville Road over Muckaloochee Creek in Lee County, built in 1970. Anticipated completion Jan. 6, 2025.
  • CR 82/Cox Road over Mossy Creek in Terrell County, built in 1950. Anticipated completion Feb. 24, 2025.
  • CR 132/Elam Church Road over Falling Creek in Calhoun County, built in 1966. Anticipated completion March 17, 2025. This bridge can’t be closed at the same time that the Rice Road bridge is closed.
  • CR 160/Morgan Road over Cemochechobee Creek in Randolph County, built in 1951. Anticipated completion May 29, 2025.

Advisory: Exact time may change due to weather conditions. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones. Please stay alert, and watch for workers. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
