GDOT: Atkinson County SR 31 scheduled to reopen this week

PEARSON – State Route 31 is scheduled to reopen Thursday, Feb. 5, following replacement of two old bridge culverts with new structures over Hog Creek and Hog Creek Tributary.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) personnel plan to do a final check on the structures Thursday morning before opening the road to traffic.

The bridge culverts located south of Pearson were built in 1940. They were in poor condition and were designed when vehicles were not as heavy as those in use today. A detour was installed in May 2025 for non-local traffic for the duration of construction.

The Hog Creek culvert was replaced with a bridge with two, 12-foot lanes and 10-foot shoulders. The tributary culvert was replaced with a new culvert.

The construction cost is approximately $5 million.
