GBI investigating 47-year-old inmate death inside Crisp Co. Detention Center
CORDELE, Ga. – Around 1:10 a.m. this morning, a 47-year-old man was found unresponsive in a holding cell at the Crisp County Detention Center in Crisp county.
Emergency services, including Crisp County Fire and Rescue, Crisp County EMS, and Crisp County Sheriff’s deputies, responded promptly. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary indications point to a suspected suicide, with no signs of foul play.
The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, and Sheriff Billy Hancock has enlisted the GBI for an independent inquiry, following established protocols. The family has been notified, and due to the ongoing investigation’s sensitivity, the individual’s identity is currently withheld.
The deceased male had been arrested by the Georgia State Patrol on charges of DUI and other traffic violations. He was admitted to the detention center around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening, awaiting the booking process.
