Former detention officer arrested following long-term contraband and corruption investigation

CAIRO, Ga. – The Grady County Sheriff’s Office announces the arrest of Zachary Paul Wisham, a former detention officer with the Grady County Detention Center, following a lengthy investigation into allegations of corruption and contraband trafficking within the facility.

Wisham has been charged with Violation of Oath of Office and Bribery in connection with his actions while employed as a detention officer.

The investigation began in August 2025 after information was received indicating that contraband was being introduced into the detention center and that detention staff members were receiving unlawful payments in exchange for prohibited items and official favors. Over the course of several months, investigators conducted an extensive review of recorded inmate phone calls, financial records, surveillance footage, internal audits, witness statements, and physical evidence.

The investigation revealed that Wisham knowingly solicited and accepted monetary payments from inmates and outside associates in exchange for providing contraband, unauthorized assistance, and confidential information. Evidence further established that Wisham abused his position of trust for personal financial gain and engaged in conduct that compromised the safety and security of the detention facility.

As a sworn law enforcement officer, Wisham took an oath to uphold the laws of the State of Georgia and to faithfully perform his duties. Investigators determined that his actions constituted a willful violation of that oath and met the legal standard for bribery under Georgia law.

The investigation remained active from August 2025 through February 2026 and involved coordination among multiple divisions within the Sheriff’s Office. Upon completion of the investigation and review of the evidence, warrants were obtained, and Wisham was taken into custody.

“This case reflects our commitment to maintaining integrity and accountability within this agency,” said Sheriff’s Office officials. “We will not tolerate misconduct by anyone entrusted with public authority. When violations occur, they will be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted.”

The Grady County Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that this investigation was conducted to protect the safety of inmates, staff, and the public, and to preserve public trust in law enforcement.

The case remains under review as it proceeds through the judicial system. Additional information may be released as it becomes available.

Anyone with information related to this or any other criminal activity is encouraged to contact the Grady County Sheriff’s Office.
