Former Cordele City Commissioner AJ Rivers celebrates 99th birthday

CORDELE, Ga. – AJ Rivers celebrated his 99th birthday today!

Just to put it into perspective, he was born before televisions were even a thought of existence.

During his time in Cordele, he served as city commissioner for 24 years.

“The message is that when I first ran for office, you know, I didn’t get lucky, but, build up a coalition. With other people, when I got ready to up all the, build up a coalition with other people, it wasn’t no problem. They knew who I was. And, I went on and got elected at large,” said AJ Rivers, WWII Veteran.

Today’s event was a drive-by celebration.

Visitors not only got to congratulate Mr. Rivers, but also took home dessert and a pen to remember his special day.

“Well, it means that, about. Keep going. The Lord keeps blessing me. I’ll be able to be here next year. You know what I mean? So, I’m thankful for the people that visit in, and every one of you can get here and one can’t get. You understand that? So I’m a people person. I’ve been in public life for 47 years, so I know, I know how I go, who I am,” said Rivers.

Rivers said 99 is special, but he’s looking forward to 100.
