Flint River Habitat for Humanity and Phoebe Health System dedicates home to woman before holidays

ALBANY, Ga. – For Danielle Malcolm, it’s been a rough few years for her and her family.

We met Danielle last year when the Phoebe Health System and Flint River Habitat for Humanity broke ground on a new house…

“I moved to Albany maybe five years ago, and my family came here not knowing which way to go and what we were going to do. And, we’ve come a long way…” said Danielle Malcolm, Habitat for Humanity Recipient.

Fast forward and that long way is over as she received the keys to her finished home.

“The wait was worth it. And, I feel joy, butterflies in my stomach and having had this been a long time. So, I feel great,” said Malcolm.

Phoebe President, Scott Steiner says this project has been in the works with Habitat for Humanity for a couple of years…

And, finally handing the house keys to Danielle felt special.

“It’s not only a commitment to Habitat for Humanity, but commitment to the community. And, I hope that one another we use our resources to take care of people who are ill and use our resources to take care of our community,” said Scott Steiner, President, Phoebe Putney Health System.

In the meantime, the Phoebe Health System is eyeing revitalizing the area around the main hospital.

“We’re talking to the city about potential housing developments and on other pieces of it. So, that’s really what we want to see is how do you revitalize this neighborhood from empty lots or abandoned buildings and houses to one that is vibrant, that has a lot of energy,” said Steiner.

But, for Danielle, she’s breathing a little easier with a place to call her own.

“It feels wonderful. I feel blessed, highly thankful. I feel blessed, yes I do,” said Malcolm.

And, while Danielle begins to move into her new home, the Phoebe Health System and Flint River Habitat for Humanity are looking forward to building the next house.

The Flint River Habitat for Humanity and Phoebe Health System has previously stated they want to build up to half a dozen homes near the main hospital in the near future.
