Fire destroys St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Ambrose, cause unknown
AMBROSE, Ga. — According to our news partners with Douglas Now, St. James Missionary Baptist Church was destroyed by fire Sunday night.
Witnesses first spotted the blaze from the eerie red glow that could be seen for miles.
When firefighters arrived, the 128-year-old church was engulfed in flames. The block exterior remained but the roof and interior of the church were completely destroyed. Monday morning, portions of the building were still smoldering. The church is a total loss, fire officials say.
Coffee County Fire Chief Steve Carver said there were seven units from seven stations that responded to the fire. The responding stations were Sinkhole Road Department, Ambrose Fire Department, Bridge Town Fire Department, Baker Highway Fire Department, Oak Park Fire Department, Bush Neil, and Rocky Pond Road Fire Department.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, but Fire Chief Steve Carver said he couldn’t rule out lightning as a possible cause.
Fire Chief Steve Carver said, “You can’t rule out lightning. You can’t rule out electrical. And you can’t rule out electrical caused by lightning.”
No one was at the church or injured from the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
