Dr. Lorenzo Carson honored as Albany Technical College’s Alumni of the Year by TCSG
ALBANY, Ga. – Albany Technical College is pleased to spotlight Dr. Lorenzo Carson as our Alumni of the Year, a prestigious title from the Technical College System of Georgia. Dr. Carson, a leader in the field of Radiologic Technology, has not only excelled in his professional area but also stands as a beacon of hope and resilience.
Dr. Carson’s journey, originating from the rural stretches of Macon County, Georgia, exemplifies the transformative potential of technical education. Born into a world where poverty and lack of basic amenities were the norms, he leveraged education as the cornerstone for change. His academic pursuits at Albany Technical Institute, now Albany Technical College, laid the groundwork for an illustrious career in healthcare.
During his tenure as a technologist at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, Dr. Carson’s ‘awakening’ propelled him to further his studies in biology with aspirations of becoming an Interventional Radiologist. His relentless dedication to academia and research led him to Albany State and, later, to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. His work yielded numerous publications, reinforcing his commitment to medical advancement.
Upon completing his residency, Dr. Carson was invited to join Radiology Associates of Albany, where he broke new ground as the first African-American Radiologist and Interventional Radiologist in the region. His impact extends beyond his medical practice; he is a respected medical advisor and an active community member, contributing to Albany Technical College’s Radiologic Technology Program and local hospital committees.
President of Albany Technical College, Dr. Emmett Griswold, remarked, “Dr. Carson’s story is one of inspiration and perseverance. He exemplifies the caliber of professionals our technical education system aspires to produce.”
Dr. Carson’s narrative demonstrates the critical role that technical colleges play in nurturing talent and fostering community leaders. As TCSG celebrates the success of its alums, Dr. Lorenzo Carson stands out as a symbol of professional excellence and an embodiment of the dream realized through technical education.
