Dougherty Co. Sheriff’s Office warns of fraudulent court clerk jury summons scams
ALBANY, Ga. – The Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning about a scam that’s been circulating through residents’ mailboxes.
The sheriff’s office spoke Friday morning about scammers sending letters, posing as the Dougherty County Court Clerk.
Officials say the scammers are even replicating the official letter format, claiming those who missed their jury duty summons can avoid penalties by paying a fine.
We spoke with two sheriff’s office investigators about what to do if you receive one of these fraudulent letters in your mailbox.
“If you look at the numbers, you can almost tell that the numbers that have been added have kind of been filled in. It’s usually two or three different numbers, which is a clue,” said Capt. Kenneth Jordan, Chief Investigator, DCSO.
“If you missed court, you would just come to the sheriff’s office or we will come knock on your door. If you missed court, there’s no need for you to put money into a machine. If you miss court,” Lt. Anthony Crimbley, Investigator, DCSO.
If you receive one of these scam court clerk letters in your mailbox, contact the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office at 229-302-3600.
