Dougherty Co. Commission finalize plans for two major projects

ALBANY, Ga. – Two big dougherty county projects are coming into focus with potential timelines. As one Dougherty county commissioner told us, the projects are on pace to have the ribbon cut in 2025.

After years of planning, bids are being sent out for the Dougherty county morgue as well as Putney Park.

District 6 Commissioner, Anthony Jones says after a presentation Monday they’re looking at breaking ground as early as the official start of summer.

“Everything is moving smoothly and both of those projects are going to go out, probably in mid June to bid. And, we just need to do some sampling, some soil sampling, all that. Just trying to get things ready to go, so that once we get started, we’ll be ready top push on through. We’re excited…” said Commissioner Anthony Jones, District 6 Commissioner, Dougherty County Commission.

The new morgue has been in talks for nearly five years, while work on Putney Park has been discussed for over 10.

With Jones saying that the people he represents in the county’s sixth district happy to see something is finally moving forward.

“Man, this is just a great day for the citizens of District 6. Even though it’s raining outside, certainly the news that we’re getting the shovels ready and the brick and mortar ready to go to work. So, certainly we’re excited for this building down there. We’ve been dealing with this situation for probably almost 10 years. So, we’re ready to close this chapter on Putney Park,” said Commissioner Jones.

And… with the timeline a little more clear following Monday’s meeting, Jones tells us that it’s realistic these projects could be done by early next year.

“If everything goes well, we’re gonna start building in the middle of June or either July, that’s when we’ll get started. And, if everything goes well, and we can plow all the way through, we’re probably looking at February or March…” said Commissioner Jones.

For now, it’s just a matter of making sure conditions hold up to keep both projects on schedule.

Jones says the county will begin sampling the land for both sites when the weather improves.
