DOCO HS holds National Signing Day celebration

Decision day

ALBANY, Ga. – It’s a special day as many of the students graduating from Dougherty County High School are making their decisions on the next step of their lives. This also holds true for their incredibly successful top students.

Dozens upon dozens of students celebrated in the halls this morning as many made their decisions on where to continue with their education on National Signing Day…

And, for Valedictorian, Jayden Keaton and Salutatorian, Tyler Guest, they certainly had options…

“It feels great. I’ve worked hard for this since middle school, I’ve been trying to build my resume up with extracurricular activities, and friendships and connections, and networking. So, for it to all come together at the end of the year, and finally be done with it, and going to my dream college, I’m really excited,” said Keaton.

“If I can do it, you can do it as well, simply because if you work hard enough, if you give your all, you’ll make it. And, plus, you don’t have to apply to forty colleges like me, you can get a good five colleges if you know what you want to do at those colleges, and major in something that you love,” said Guest.

Between the two students, they’ve earned more than 100 acceptance letters to colleges across the country, and nearly two million in scholarship dollars.

Dougherty County High Principal, Jerry Sanders couldn’t be more proud of two of his top students.

“Our kids are performing equivalent to any child in any other county such as Gwinnett county, any county. And, our kids are performing, and they’re showing that they are competitive, they are working hard, and that you can do great things in Dougherty,” said Sanders.

For Jayden, he’s planning to go to Morehouse University where he plans to study…

While Tyler is still torn between Howard and Xavier University…

But, both have their parents as inspiration for pushing themselves this far…

“…I would have to say my mom, because I’ve seen her work so hard, trying to provide so hard for me and my family, and my dad, he supported me through everything, and so to see them working so hard to provide for me and my brothers, that makes me want to go out and when I get older, help them out,” said Guest.

And, hopefully set the bar for future students to pass…

“I feel like if got accepted to 55, everyone can get accepted to at least 10 or 15, or maybe someone will beat my high score of 55 and get to 60, and get 2 million in scholarships next year. So, hopefully, somebody beats my ranking,” said Keaton.

As Dougherty High’s best and brightest continue into the next step of their lives, they’re excited for what the future holds.

According to Principal Sanders, Dougherty County High School’s graduation rate is well above 85 percent.
