Deputies arrest DUI suspect after high-speed chase on Highway 93 South in Grady Co.

CARIO, Ga. – Zero Tolerance in Action: DUI Pursuit Stopped Before Entering Cairo City Limits

The Grady County Sheriff’s Office continues its aggressive enforcement efforts to protect the citizens of this county, stopping a dangerous DUI driver before lives were put at risk inside of Cairo less than one hour ago this morning.

Deputies attempted a traffic stop on Highway 93 South after observing a vehicle driving recklessly at a high rate of speed. The driver refused to stop, initiating a pursuit and further endangering motorists on the roadway.

Due to the immediate threat to public safety, deputies utilized a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver on the suspect vehicle before it could enter the city limits of Cairo. The maneuver was successfully executed, bringing the pursuit to a safe conclusion and preventing what could have been a tragic outcome.

The driver was identified as 21-year-old Meki Ty Sean Gilyard of Tallahassee Florida.

Gilyard was arrested and charged with:

• Felony Fleeing and Eluding

• Driving Under the Influence

• Reckless Driving

Sheriff Martin Earl Prince issued the following statement:

“Let me be absolutely clear — we have zero tolerance for reckless, impaired drivers who choose to put innocent lives at risk. When someone makes the decision to flee and drive under the influence, they are making the decision to endanger families on our roads. Our deputies will act decisively and aggressively to stop that threat. Public safety comes first, and we will not hesitate to use the training and tools available to us to protect this community.”

Sheriff Prince further commended the deputies involved for their professionalism and decisive action.

“I am proud of the outstanding job our deputies did utilizing their training to safely end this pursuit. Their actions very likely prevented serious injury or loss of life. That is what proactive law enforcement looks like.”
