DCPD warns about counterfeit $100 bills
ALBANY, Ga. – The Dougherty County Police Department (DCPD) is issuing a warning to local business owners. That counterfeit bills are circulating throughout the county.
Investigator, Sergeant Melvin Stultz says they’ve been seeing fake hundred dollar bills pop up lately.
Stultz spoke with us about how these suspects are tricking people with them.
“The suspects have been trying to pass off the fictitious $100 bills in exchange for change on smaller bills with the citizens. And, they used these fictitious hundred dollar bills to go and try to make purchases at department stores….” said Sgt. Melvin Stultz, Investigator, DCPD.
From department stores to Dollar Generals, the DCPD is warning people to be on the lookout when someone is paying with cash.
And, while Sergeant Stultz couldn’t show us a counterfeit bill when we met with him, he did explain how to spot one.
“A lot of times they have misspelled words. It feels, the feeling of it is very unfamiliar. Also, there are different ways to hold it up to the light…” said Sergeant Stultz.
If you’re one of the people working at these stores and come across these counterfeit bills, Sergeant Stultz recommends a couple of things.
“If you come across one of these fictitious $100 bills, feel free to give Dougherty County Police a call. Call 9-1-1 we’ll respond and we’ll take possession of the $100 bill and figure out where it came from. We do not want anybody to become a victim of this crime, especially around the time of tax season,” said Sergeant Stultz.
As they continue to look into this counterfeit bill scam, the DCPD is asking the public to be aware when handling a hundred dollar bill.
If you have any tips, you can contact Dougherty County Crime Stoppers at 229-436-8477.
