Crisp Co. Sheriff’s Office on recent spoofing scam incidents impersonating law enforcement

CORDELE, Ga. – Scamming has always been an issue since technology has evolved.

Recently there have been a surge of scammers attacking citizens across South Georgia.

As seen in front of you…

Many local sheriff’s offices have been contacted about these scams becoming more frequent.

With scammers getting more innovative with how they may deceive you.

Whether through texts, phone calls, or email.

“They often email getting them open and hackers getting access to bank accounts, your online apps. That sort of thing. A lot of those have security features, but a lot of the hackers are overseas or are experts and would appear to be over seas,” said Lt. Cole Eason, Criminal Investigations Unit, CCSO.

These criminals can even change their phone number when calling.

With a recent incident in Crisp County.

Where a scammer called with the sheriff’s office phone number.

Luckily the victim took the correct action and called the sheriff’s office himself and they helped him realize the scam.

“Basically, just don’t give out any of your information, unless you know who you’re talking to. If anyone claims to be law enforcement on the phone. I would contact your local law enforcement after that call. And, say, hey, I want to verify that before you give your information, because anything you give them over the phone can be obtained at that point, and they can use it for other means. They can open credit cards in your name, create debt, use you as other potential suspects to cover their identity, all sorts of things,” said Lt. Eason.

So, be sure to be safe with scammers at any age.

As they are getting more and more advanced every day.
