Crisp Co. Sheriff’s Office firearm familiarization course

CORDELE, Ga. – The Crisp County Sheriff’s Office is once again offering up a major course. And… it’s already being well-received by the community.

We sat down with Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock Friday morning to talk about the return of the firearm familiarization course.

“There’s a lot more people buying and getting firearms licensed now across the country. And, we just want to offer something as a part of our outreach program that will teach you a little bit about your firearm. Now, you’re not going to be an expert marksman when you leave here on Saturday afternoon after going to the course. But, you will have a lot more confidence,” said Sheriff Billy Hancock, Crisp Co. Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Hancock says the program had been a success in previous years, but became defunct due to several roadblocks.

“COVID put a damper on people coming together in large groups and groups, and so that began to slow what we were doing as a firearm familiarization course down. And, then our range our range was just not conducive to carrying the public out there. It had stick targets, paper targets stapled up,” said Sheriff Hancock.

The familiarization course is set for Saturday, September 7th and the sheriff’s office is already looking forward to teaching the public.

“Offering has proved they are in demand. The first one filled up in 5 hours, the second one filled up within a day. And, so, we’re going to try to host a couple of these a month for a while, and then we will get down to maybe one a month and then once a quarter or something, as we get a majority of the people an opportunity to come and see what the firearm is all about and see what a weapon does,” said Sheriff Hancock.

And… Sheriff Hancock says the entire sheriff’s office is looking forward to the return of the familiarization courses as well.

“And, as a sheriff’s office, it gives us an opportunity to interact with our citizens and do something for our citizens that they need,” said Sheriff Hancock.

While the first course has already been filled up for some time, Sheriff Hancock encourages those in Crisp county to keep an eye out for future course dates.
