Crisp Academy installs lightning detection system
CORDELE, Ga. – The Crisp Academy is getting a major boost when it comes to informing students and families about severe weather. Thanks to a new system installed by the sheriff’s office.
The lightning detection system was installed Wednesday and provides and audible warning when dangerous weather is coming into the area.
Crisp Headmaster, Tim Hathcock explained to us how the system works.
“What it does it will actually let you know when bad weather comes around, especially lightning. Right now, we had relied on Weather.com or Weather Bug when we would have a sporting event, where lighting would show up within a five mile radius, we’d have to get teams off the field for like 30 minutes,” said Tim Hathcock, Headmaster, Crisp Academy.
With hurricane season beginning in just a few weeks, having a system like this to inform students and especially parents of thunderstorms, tornadoes and high winds is going to be a major benefit.
“You’re talking about an over $5,000 implement to help us out and adjust the safety of our kids. Now, we don’t got to rely on something not happening, now we can know what the weather’s like and it’ll help us keep our kids safe,” said Hathcock.
And… Headmaster Hathcock was excited at the prospect Thor Guard Lightning Prediction and Warning System will have once football season picks up at the end of the summer.
“This let’s us know by siren, that if lighting is in the nearby area, it gets us off the field, but the great thing about it to me is, it’ll let us know when it’s all clear. We may not have to wait for a stretch of 30 minutes. It’ll let us know when we can go back to play,” said Hathcock.
In fact, the system is already sending out warnings given Thursday’s weather.
“…We just got a tornado warning or a watch a while ago in Sumter county. It was able to let us know that it was coming up as far as right now,” said Hathcock.
While severe weather like we’re experiencing Thursday is just a small test, the academy is happy to have this new system in place to keep students and their families informed.
Hathcock says the timing couldn’t have been better to have the system installed with Crisp Academy holding their summer workouts later in the month.
