Cordele-Crisp Chamber announces plans for 75th Annual Watermelon Days Festival
CORDELE, Ga. – The Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce announces that they are making plans to celebrate the 75th Annual Watermelon Days Festival. We are looking for volunteers to help us plan a grand celebration for one of the oldest festivals in the state of Georgia. The first planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, January 11th in the Chamber boardroom at 10 am.
In addition, we are holding a contest for the theme and artwork for the festival. The theme/artwork should include: 75th Anniversary, watermelons, and Cordele/Crisp. The deadline for the artwork is January 31st. The winner will receive a shirt, and a cash prize of $100, and will be recognized on social media, newsletter, newspaper, radio, and television. Submit your entry to the Cordele-Crisp Chamber of Commerce, P O Box 158 Cordele, GA 31010 or drop by the office 502 South 2nd Street.
We plan to bring back all the favorites of the festival: Watermelon Capital Pageant, Dog Show, Fishing Rodeo, chunking, eating and seed spit contests, talent show, Day Out with Thomas is incorporated into our Watermelon Days Festival events again this year, and will be held on the first three weekends in June at the Georgia Veterans Depot, WALB Noon Show, Reading with the Queens, Watermelon Walk, & more! We would also like to add some events during this milestone to celebrate the crop that has made our community so famous, our farmers who not only grow melons, but all the other crops, and our title as “Watermelon Capital of the World”.
The main day of the festival is June 22nd and kicks off with the Cordele Lions Club Parade. After the parade, the events move to Georgia Veterans State Park, where you will find arts & crafts and food vendors, as well as entertainment at the park.
The festival celebration will end with a BOOM on July 5th, with Fireworks on the Flint! Fireworks on the Flint will be held at Georgia Veterans State Park over beautiful Lake Blackshear.
