ADEL, Ga. – Cook County Sheriff’s Office Sadly Announces the Passing of Corporal Howard “Howie” Lorette

It is with profound sadness and tremendous grief that Sheriff Doug Hanks and the Cook County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Cook County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Howard “Howie” Lorette following a sudden illness at his home.

Corporal Lorette was a fifteen-year veteran of law enforcement having served eight of those with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. Lorette also served with the City of Sparks Police Department and the Valdosta Police Department previously.

Corporal Lorette served the citizens of Cook County as a patrol deputy, patrol supervisor, and in his current assignment as a School Resource Officer at Cook County High School.

The Sheriff’s Office asks everyone to keep his wife, children, and numerous family and friends in your thoughts and prayers in the coming days and weeks. We also ask for your prayers for the Sheriff’s Office, Cook County School System, and our entire community.

Deputy Howard Lorette III, known affectionately to all as Howie, passed away suddenly at his home on August 16, 2025, at the age of 49. Born on November 11, 1975, in Miami, Florida, Howie was a man whose presence was characterized by his handy skills, courageous spirit, and boundless love.

Howie’s life was marked by dedicated service to his community. He had a distinguished career in law enforcement, serving with honor and distinction as Deputy Howie Lorette with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. His commitment to public safety began with his time at the Sparks Police Department, followed by his valued tenure at the Valdosta Police Department. Howie’s colleagues will remember him as a steadfast and reliable presence, someone who could always be counted on in times of need.

Beyond his professional life, Howie was a man of many interests and talents. His sense of humor was a source of joy and laughter for all who knew him. Howie was known for his inability to say no when asked for help, always giving his best in every endeavor. His skills extended to the paint and body shop to enjoying cooking turkeys for everyone at Thanksgiving. A passionate sports fan, Howie’s enthusiasm for the Miami Hurricanes and Miami Dolphins was infectious, bringing excitement to game days shared with friends and family.

A true family man, Howie’s heart belonged to his loved ones. He is survived by his devoted wife, Vickie Lorette of Sparks; his children, Ethan Lorette of Fayetteville, and Ava Lorette of Sparks; his mother, Beverly Lorette of Adel; his sister, Lisa Lorette of Adel; and his nephew, Blake (Jayla) Jackson of Sparks. His family circle also includes his niece, Ashley Davis; great-nieces, Paityn Jackson and Parker Jackson; great-nephew, Paxton Jackson; and brother-in-law, Ken Barrett of Sparks. Howie was preceded in death by his father, Howard Lorette, Jr.; paternal grandparents, Howard Sr. & Martha Lorette; and maternal grandparents, Henry & Mary Bennett. Each family member cherished Howie for his caring nature, and he will be deeply missed.

Howie Lorette’s legacy is one of unwavering love, support, and dedication to his family, friends, and community. His memory will be carried in the hearts of those who knew him best, and his influence will continue to be felt long after his passing. Howie’s life was a testament to the impact one person can make through a lifetime of service, humor, and an abundance of love.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 21, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Adel with Rev. Brian Gay officiating, and Sheriff Doug Hanks and Captain Brent Exum speaking. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery Annex. The family will be receiving friends Wednesday evening starting at 6:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church Adel.
