COOK Co., Ga. – Due to prolonged dry weather and worsening drought conditions expected, the Cook County Board of Commissioners has adopted a temporary ordinance restricting outdoor burning of yard debris in the unincorporated areas of Cook County. The ordinance is intended to reduce wildfire risks and protect public safety, property, and natural resources.

Effective February 17, 2026, all open burning of yard debris, including leaves, limbs, grass, and other vegetative matter, is prohibited within the unincorporated area of Cook County until drought conditions improve and the ordinance is formally rescinded by the Cook County Board of Commissioners.

Exemptions to the restriction include:

 Agricultural or forestry burns conducted under a valid permit and in accordance with state law and Georgia Forestry Commission guidelines

 Controlled burns conducted by government agencies or authorized personnel for forestry or public safety purposes

 Fires used for cooking in approved grills or fire pits, provided they are attended and comply with applicable safety regulations
