Colquitt County Special Olympics hosts its Spring Games celebrating special athletes
MOULTRIE, Ga. – Under the bright Georgia sun, Colquitt County High School (CCHS) buzzed with excitement as the community gathered to celebrate a spirit of inclusivity at the Special Olympics Spring Games.
The festivities commenced with an inspiring opening ceremony in the school’s gymnasium, setting the stage for a series of engaging events.
The young superstars showcased their skills and enthusiasm in a range of activities tailored to their abilities, including kickball, soccer, flag football, and other activities specifically designed for students with special needs.
“Accommodations are meant for each student. The Olympics have to modify how we play to best fit their needs. If their strength isn’t there playing kickball, we set the ball in front of them and then they have the opportunity to kick. We focus on that. Individuals student in what they need so they feel included, they feel seen and that they have the best experience they can,” said Bryson Giddens, Autism teacher, C.A. Gray Junior High School.
Throughout the event, a heartfelt appreciation was extended to individuals with special needs and the dedicated supporters who champion them.
“I volunteer because my brother is actually diagnosed with special needs. So, getting to celebrate students who maybe don’t get celebrated at home or just any little milestone that they do in the classroom, they get celebrated more,” said Peyton George, Volunteer, CCHS.
In every smile, cheer, and triumphant finish, the Spring Special Olympics at Colquitt County High School (CCHS) exemplified the power of community and the boundless potential within every individual.
“I think these events are just great for students because they get to be celebrated. Just so great to see them feel loved and celebrated. Just even the little small milestone like kicking a ball. They get so celebrated for that because it might be little, but to them, it is a big deal. It’s just awesome to see them feel so loved and important and celebrated,” said George.
