Colquitt County High School’s Young Farmer Program Elementary Ag Day
MOULTRIE, Ga. – Colquitt County elementary students get a hands-on lesson in agriculture during ag day.
The Colquitt County High School Young Farmer Program is planting seeds of appreciation for agriculture in the next generation. That mission inspired agriculture day, an event that gives elementary students across the county a hands-on introduction to the world of farming.
“We spend probably six months preparing for this. As far as getting together, what booths we will have, what knowledge we want to provide the children. Getting our volunteers organized and just overall preparedness,” said Dr. Heath Cross, Colquitt Co. Young Farmer Advisor.
The is the second year the program has hosted agriculture day. The event gives students hands-on exposure to various aspects of agriculture, including welding, greenhouse management, and farm equipment operations.
Dr. Heath Cross, Colquitt County Young Farmer Advisor, explains why introducing agriculture at a young age is crucial for the future of the industry.
“Our economy is strongly driven by agriculture; and a lot of times our children do not understand where our food comes from or what it takes to get there. They also do not understand the employment opportunities that come with agriculture and what fun things are out there. They assume agriculture is just farming and it goes way beyond that level. And, there’s a little bit of something for everybody if they stop for a moment and just take a look,” said Dr. Cross.
