Colquitt Co. School District announces 2024-2025 cohort of REACH scholars

MOULTRIE, Ga. – A group of exceptional Colquitt county students take the first steps toward their academic dreams.

The Colquitt County School District has announced its 2024-2025 cohort of REACH scholars, a group of students recognized for their academic performance.

REACH Georgia is the state’s first needs-based mentorship and college scholarship program, designed to help academically promising students succeed.

The program’s mission is to provide the academic, social, and financial support students need to graduate from high school, access college, and thrive in their post-secondary pursuits.

“With the REACH scholar program, these students during high school, they will have a mentor that will help encourage them through the way, as well as an academic coach that will stay on their academics and make sure that their performing well. It provides a $10,000 scholarship. And, with that scholarship, its broken down into $2500 per semester year. So, they’ll have that extra financial support as they go to college,” said Felicia Howard, Colquitt Co. 9th Grade Counselor.

The REACH program ensures that every students, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to succeed.

“I like that their REACH program ensures that all students, regardless of their background or their circumstances have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. And, with us as counselors, we not only work on the student’s academics, we also foster their personal growth, their leadership growth, as well as their social emotional development,” said Howard.

We had the opportunity to speak with one of this year’s REACH scholars, Alyxis Herring, who shares her plans and aspirations for the future.

“It feels good to be a REACH scholar, because I never would of that I would make it this far. My goal is to go to the University of Georgia to become a pediatric nurse. And, the things I do now is right, is practice being a nurse for kids. When my cousins get sick, I help them get back their health. And, when my mom needs help her out. If she’s sick, I help her around the house and make sure she gets back her health,” said Alyxis Herring, 2024-2025 REACH Scholar.

Alyxis also shared words of advice for other children her age, and even younger, encouraging them to make the most of every opportunity.

“Don’t let someone tell you what you have to do, just take it step by step and you’ll get there easier. Whatever you put your mind to, you can do it. And, don’t get mad, because you can’t get things right. You have to get questions wrong for them to get easier. And, if you don’t take it step by step, you’re not going to get anywhere because you will just get mad and give up. You are not supposed to give up. You’ve got to get into your future goals,” said Herring.
