Coffee Co., Douglas recovers from Helene’s devastation
DOUGLAS, Ga. – I’m here in Douglas, and it’s a very sad sight to see as every block you go down, you can see the impact of the hurricane and different fashions.
There’s a lot of wooded areas here in Douglas. So, you see trees, whether it’s in the ground, in their yards or sadly on top of businesses and local residents’ homes.
That can obviously cause different issues like the power being out throughout the city.
There’s very little to no power or cell connection throughout the city of Douglas.
They’re trying to get the street lights back on, so traffic was running a lot more smoothly.
And, they’re slowly doing that here today.
Also, they’re trying to get power back for everyone, especially businesses, as obviously you can’t pay for anything outside of cash.
But, they’ve shared some of their issues and what they’ve faced throughout this time because of the hurricane.
“We’ve never had anything like this. It’s like every house is destroyed. Nobody gets a word. Like, we still don’t know when you’ll be able to work and money wise and, you know, bills. So it’s crazy. Right now, I’m just trying to help everybody. But, we got a good community, everybody helping everybody. I think everybody just wants electricity, washing clothes and taking showers. That’s basically the main thing right now. Like, I know you all were fine with that. We just have some electricity and light. It’s so dark and light you can’t see anything and wires hanging in. It’s just crazy,” said Jayce, resident.
We will have to keep Douglas in our thoughts as they try to recover over the coming months.
Douglas was one of the most impacted cities due to the hurricane, but that wasn’t going to stop Coffee High School’s head football coach Mike Coe from wanting to give his players a little bit of normalcy…
On Monday evening, the Trojans would face Northside High School in Warner Robins, and Coe would explain after the game why getting his team out of the house during this time, even for a couple hours, was beneficial…
We’ll have more from this game with sports reporter Rodney Washington later on in sports.
Gabe Hutton reporting.
