City of Unadilla plans 7th annual New Year’s Eve ‘Hog Drop’
UNADILLA, Ga. – The small community of Unadilla is gearing up to close out the year in a big way as they’re preparing to host their 7th annual New Year’s Eve Hog Drop.
We met with Unadilla’s mayor, and renowned pitmaster, Myron Mixon, about the Hog Drop.
He’s looking to continue to grow the event…
Especially with the main focal point being a major barbecue competition.
“…We got a barbecue competition also, I think 30 teams, 30 teams this year. It has grown and grown. And, the thing is, I think we have one of the more family friendly New Year’s Eve celebrations, it’s for everybody. Everybody comes here, we get along, we have fun and celebrate the new year of 2024,” said Mayor Myron Mixon, City of Unadilla.
But, the fun won’t stop with just barbecue.
As Mixon tells us about the litany of events going on, that his son, Michael has been putting together.
“Michael and them have gotten us a dirt bike stunt show coming on. Robinson’s Racing Pigs… axe throwing… we have the rock wall climbing for the kids… mechanical bull riding. We have chainsaw carving artists. We’ll have beverages for everybody…” said Mayor Mixon.
For a community like Unadilla, New Years promises to be the biggest iteration of the Hog Drop yet…
And, Mayor Mixon is inviting everyone in Southwest Georgia to come out…
“It means a lot. And like I said, we’re a small town, but we’re a proud small town. And, we like to do these things for our citizens as well as outsiders who want to come in and enjoy it with us,” said Mayor Mixon.
But, no New Year’s Eve celebration is complete without fireworks, and Unadilla is going to ring in the new year with a bang.
“…When the hog drops, our motorcycle stunt guys are going to jump the hog, while the fireworks are going off,” said Mayor Mixon.
Mayor Mixon and the city of Unadilla are making sure that this year’s Hog Drop lives up to be the biggest New Year’s party in southwest Georgia.
The hog drop will start at 6 p.m. Sunday night in downtown Unadilla and will run until 1 a.m.
