Citizens express concerns over Riverside Oakview Cemetery policy
ALBANY, Ga. – The citizens of Albany have voiced their concerns regarding the Riverside Oakview grounds policy.
After a social media post on March 20, 2024, on the city of Albany’s official Facebook page detailing the grounds policy for the Riverside Oakview Cemetery, there has been a variety of reactions among the Albany community.
According to the policy, each grave is permitted only one floral arrangement. Among the prohibited items are solar lights, flags, ceramics, stuffed animals, blankets, and fences. Cemetery staff will remove and dispose of any items found to be in violation of the established grounds policy.
This post brought about concerns over the community’s ability to express individualized forms of remembrance and tribute within the sacred place.
A representative of the Riverside Oakview issued a statement affirming the long-standing implementation of the existing ground policies,
“These are the existing grounds policies which have been in effect for several years. Recently cemetery staff removed several older signs that have been in place for many years and replaced them with one larger new sign. The only update to the cemetery is the installation of a new sign.”
The social media post has elicited a spectrum of emotions among Albany residents, with some voicing frustration and disheartenment, while others exhibit a more stoic acceptance, acknowledging the challenges faced by cemetery staff in upholding the grounds’ integrity and appearance.
For any inquiries or concerns regarding the grounds’ policy or related matters, individuals are encouraged to visit the cemetery office or call at 229-302-1420.
