2023 ANNULAR ECLIPSE – OCTOBER 14, 2023: This will be the first solar eclipse visible to SWGA since August 21, 2017, but we did see a Total Lunar Eclipse on May 22, 2022 coinciding with the Flower Blood Moon.
It’s an Annular Eclipse because while the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, it is at or near its farthest point from Earth.
The Annular Solar Eclipse will be a partial one for us with about 50%-60% coverage, peaking around 1:16 pm EDT, but the “ring of fire” as the Moon moves across the center of the Sun will only happen in the path of annularity.
It is NEVER safe to look directly at the Sun without specialized eye protection designed for solar viewing.
There will be a Total Solar Eclipse in which the sun is entirely blocked on April 8, 2024. The path of totality will be closer as SWGA sees 70%-80% coverage.
After 2024, a solar eclipse will not happen again until January 26, 2028.
