Carroll Street Gardens townhomes groundbreaking
EAST ALBANY, Ga. – A new significant development is underway for the east side of Albany. Designed to create living opportunities for residents.
Cars lined Carroll Street as residents gathered to show their support for the groundbreaking of Carroll Street Gardens, a new townhome-style community.
“With this partnership, the project expanded from eight units to the cost of $1.8 million to 32 units. Mixed income development. That will be a $4.1 million investment. That’s worthy of applause. Our journey to this groundbreaking has been driven by vision, a vision to create a community where everyone can live with dignity, stability and hope for a better future. The Carroll Street Gardens will be a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a common purpose,” said Orson Butron Jr., DCED Public Service Manager.
The 32-unit townhome development was made possible through a collaborative effort involving the Albany Department of Community and Economic Development, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the MP Organization of Atlanta. This project is designed to provide more than just housing… It aims to build a foundation for brighter futures.
Carroll Street Gardens will offer a strong, sustainable, and inclusive community, providing affordable homes for individuals and families across a range of incomes.
“There are eight units on the table and now we have 32 units. 13 of those for people that are experiencing homelessness, affordable and market rate units. One thing I want to say is this is going to be the first sip panel development here in the city of Albany. And, what that does for the city of Albany and for this development, it allows the renters and owners of these units to save money over time, energy efficiency. So, when you talk about affordable housing, we look at like, get it cheap, get it done. No, I want the end user to experience the benefit of what we’re developing here,” said Phillip Blow, CEO, MP Organization.
Mayor of Albany, Bo Dorough, provides further details about this development.
“…Is that the greater risk is families with children, and that is who will be inhabiting the units here. What you will see is families who are facing eviction have a place to come until father and mother are placed back into work and their finances improve so they can have a place of their own. We are going to council our residents by saving money on economic literacy, which so many people in our community need this type of instruction and guidance. They’ll be receiving it here. I want to thank you all for being here. I want to thank the community, the Department of Community and Economic Development, I want to thank the MP Organization, the architects, the engineers, the contractor who’s going to build this. But more than that, I’m looking forward to a brighter day. Thank you,” said Bo Dorough, Mayor, City of Albany.
