Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany hosts annual Steak & Burger Night
Over 110 tables served in support of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany
ALBANY, GA- Over 100 tables set, the blue carpet rolled out and the kids tables received a gourmet meal at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Albany’s biggest event of the year, Steak and Burger Night.
“It’s one of those things we always try to make sure we plan for a large crowd. However, this year was a little bit larger than anticipated, but, wonderful problem” said Tim Wofford, CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Albany.
This dinner acts as a fundraiser for the clubs with a main purpose of placing kids on a pedestal and rewarding their hard work… Therefore, they are served delicious steak dinners, while the adults are served hamburgers.
However, Wofford said this event provides much more than full stomachs.
“We try to make sure the kids get the opportunity to talk to professionals at their tables. So, we put two to three individuals at a table, and they get to fellowship with professionals around this community. And, that’s what it’s all about, just giving them an opportunity to learn more about what’s happening here in Albany,” said Wofford.
Aside from delicious meals, attendees had the opportunity to hear from Olympic Gold Medalist and motivational speaker, Dominique Dawes, as well as the 2023 Youth of the Year Award candidates.
This award is BCGA’s highest achievement, honoring an individual’s exceptional accomplishments in leadership, service, and academic excellence. This year’s recipient hopes to use her new platform to bring awareness and implement change to an ongoing issue…
“I plan to make a change for bullying. Bullying is a big deal for because when I was little I was being bullied, and I knew it wasn’t a great feeling. And, a few months later, I heard somebody had committed suicide due to bullying, and I think we should make a change for that,” said Jaden Haywood, BCGA 2023 Youth of the Year award recipient.
Haywood said she will take many things from BCGA with her to Florida A&M University next year and encourages others to become a part of the organization.
“Something that I will take with me from the Boys and Girls Club is my leadership skills, my confidence and to always believe in myself… I encourage kids to join the Boys and Girls Club because it is a fun place to learn and grow and you can experience many different things,” said Haywood.
Wofford explains support from the dinner and future events go right back into the Clubs, so they can continue setting students like Jaden up for success.
“We are always trying to work to keep our doors open and making sure we give our kids a safe place to be. We just want to give them opportunities and exposure to all of these careers, colleges, tech schools, give them every opportunity to be successful,” said Wofford.
