Best Friends Humane Society of Worth Co. addresses feral cat problem
POULAN, Ga. – Worth County’s Animal Control is dealing with a big problem: the feral cats that are being dropped at the Best Friends Humane Society, with many in terrible condition.
Shelter director, Leah Orr tells us they’ve been having a major influx of cats abandoned at the humane society in rural Worth county as this is when most feral cats end up giving birth.
“It’s kitten season, it happens every year. It’s something we prepare for, but we’re currently at capacity with cats, as are a lot of other shelters. And, people are finding them and dumping them at the gate…” said Leah Orr, Shelter Director, Best Friends Humane Society.
In fact, several cats were found at the front door of the humane society earlier in the week…
And, as Leah tells us, they were in pretty rough shape when the staff found them.
“It was a box that had three kittens in it. And they were sick, upper respiratory, their eyes were gunked shut. We also had one two weeks ago, there were seven kittens in that box. So, it’s happening more often,” said Orr.
So… the humane society is turning to the public for help.
“So a lot of people feel like ‘well, we dropped it off at the shelter, that’s the best place, it isn’t a dirt road. We appreciate that, but we need you guys to call. Just call and communicate with the shelters, let us know what it is, where you found them, how many. Just so we can start reaching out to our rescue partners…” said Orr.
And… any help they can get is greatly appreciated.
“We’re always looking for donations. We’re running very low on kitten food. We also need fosters, so if you’re willing to foster, sponsor an adoption to help move cats faster; just communicate with your local shelters,” said Orr.
And… if you’re interested in providing help to the best friends humane society, you can contact them at (229) 777-7774.
