ASU to host Phoebe’s Annual Men’s Health Fair titled ‘Shop Talk: No Man Left Behind’ on Father’s Day Weekend

ALBANY, Ga. – With Father’s Day coming this weekend, the Phoebe Health System is once again reaching out to men in the community with the goal of helping them take control of their health.

Phoebe Community Benefit Manager, Darrell Sabbs spoke with us about the Father’s Day tradition, this year titled ‘Shop Talk: No Man Left Behind’…

And… Sabbs emphasizes the Shop Talk part, wanting the men who show up to feel like they’re at their local barbershop.

“You know, the barbershop is one of the most trusted places in the community for conversation and for fellowship. So, when men come in, they’ll experience a raw, but truthful conversation about men’s behaviors, men’s beliefs, but particularly men’s health and wellness…” said Darrell Sabbs, Community Benefit Manager, Phoebe Health System.

Sabbs spoke about the importance of talking about health in a recreation of a community setting like a barbershop and why they want it to matter to the men attending.

“Men are very skillful when it comes to a lot of things. But, when it comes to preserving our health; we have lawyers, we have mechanics, but very few of us have doctors. It’s so important that not only we do the screenings, and give you your health status, but to help get you a primary care doctor, so that you can get a navigator through your health and wellness…” said Sabbs.

To someone like Sabbs, Saturday is a chance to show men that they are valued, and worth the effort in healthcare.

“It’s so important we recognize men’s value. And, looking at men’s value, men say that they are just strong and capable people who help so much in our community…” said Sabbs.

As well, the health system is encouraging families to give their father’s the additional gift of a clean bill of health for Father’s Day.

“Instead of giving that guy say, a lawnmower, a grill or a necktie, let’s give him the gift of life…” said Sabbs.

The Phoebe Health System is encouraging men of all ages to come together this weekend so they can talk shop about their health and be around for their families.

The Men’s Health Fair will run from 8 a.m. to Noon this Saturday at the Billy C. Black Auditorium on Albany State University’s East Campus.
