APD talks preventing break-ins during summer season
And of course, as always, Lt. Segroves tells us that if you see something, say something and to contact the Albany Police.
ALBANY, Ga. – After a recent break-in on Northwood Drive, the Albany Police Department is putting out a message warning about break-ins. Especially, with the summer season being a prime time for it.
Police Lieutenant Jon Segroves discussed the information behind this surveillance video put out by the Albany Police this past weekend.
“We had two male subjects break into a house in the 1600 block of Northwood area. We were very lucky that nobody was hurt, and nothing was taken. But then there is also surveillance video of the two suspects,” said Lt. Jon Segroves, Albany Police Dept.
But, this latest break in highlights an ongoing problem…
Lieutenant Segroves says that compared to previous years, the number of break-ins that have taken place so far in 2023 are abut on par with those previous figures.
“For burglaries this year, we’ve had around 160 burglaries this year. Now that includes business burglaries, home burglaries, shed burglaries. The smash & grab type, where they knock windows out of usually of a convenience store, and go in and grab items and run out with that. So, we’re around 160 so far this year…” he said.
With the summer underway and many opting to take vacations, it leaves them as a prime target for break-ins and burglaries.
“One of the things you’ll see in the summer is because people are out enjoying themselves, the days are longer, you get more sunshine, people leave the houses for longer times to go on vacation, things like that; opportunities do present themselves to become s a victim of a burglary…” he said.
But, thankfully there are plenty of things people can do to make sure their house doesn’t become a target to be broken in to…
With not advertising that you’re going on vacation on social media.
Another option Lieutenant Segroves told us was to invest in a home camera system.
“…Camera systems are relatively inexpensive as compared to your property. I mean you could spend $300-$400 for a surveillance system, but you lose one Playstation, you’re out $500. So, in relative terms, a small investment in some type of a security system is cheap in the long run.” he said.
And of course, as always, Lt. Segroves tells us that if you see something, say something and to contact the Albany Police.
The investigation into the break in on Northwood Drive is still active at this time.
