APD provides safety tips after several pedestrian accidents
ALBANY, Ga. – The Albany Police Department (APD) is speaking up after a series of dangerous accidents over the last couple of weeks.
CBS 44’s Brian Roche has more.
Following a hit and run here on South Mock Road, Albany Police Chief, Michael Persley is speaking up about pedestrian safety.
The police chief spoke up about the hit and run on South Mock Road and gave us an update on the pedestrian struck.
“Upon their arrival, it was learned that the pedestrian was crossing (South) Mock Road in the turning lane when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver did not see the pedestrian when he was in the road and the pedestrian is currently at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in critical condition,” said Chief Michael Persley, APD.
And, this hit and run is just the latest in a string of traffic accidents in the last few weeks, as the police department has put out multiple releases detailing crashes that have sent people to the hospital or worse.
In fact the Albany Police Department (APD) put out this list of reminders on their Facebook page early Tuesday afternoon as a means of helping pedestrians protect themselves.
“With all of these incidents, there’s plenty of lessons to learn. And, we want people to take heed to what we’ve talked about and follow the safety measures that we provide along with others,” said Chief Persley.
While the Albany Police Chief mentions pedestrians protecting themselves with means such as wearing brighter colored clothes, and walking against the flow of traffic, there’s also the matter of reminding the drivers.
“With that, the importance is that we just want people to drive safe on our streets. And, we do know that people do drive reckless. People are driving under the influence. And, this is another continued effort of what we’re doing to curtail those behaviors. But, first and foremost, it starts with the individual and then others who are around it to stop them from doing what they’re doing,” said Chief Persley.
And, Chief Persley wants to remind the public that preventing these accidents starts with good judgment when getting behind the wheel.
Chief Persley also recommends that if you are involved in a traffic accident to try check on the other and call 911.
