Andrew College presents Alfred Uhry’s ‘Driving Miss Daisy’

CUTHBERT, Ga. – Get ready for a timeless theatrical experience as Andrew College prepares to stage Alfred Uhry’s classic play, “Driving Miss Daisy.”

The Andrew College Theatre Department is pleased to unveil the performance dates for the cherished southern play, ‘Driving Miss Daisy,’ written by Alfred Uhry.

This upcoming production promises to captivate audiences with its compelling storytelling and exceptional performances.

“So, ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ by Alfred Uhry was written, oh, I think it was 1983 as an off-Broadway play, and it eventually won the Pulitzer Prize. And then was turned into a movie that has become a classic at this point. We always try to select our fall production based upon who the majors are, who are my actors, who needs to be serviced with a good role, and then also what is our community going to come out and enjoy? And, I knew that ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ would be a title that people were familiar with and would want to come see,” said Deborah Liss-Green, Associate Professor of Theatre and Fine Arts Division Coordinator.

Despite facing challenges along the way, the effort to bring ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ to the stage at Andrew College has been a determined one.

Following postponement of their October production, the college is now gearing up to deliver a stellar performance of ‘Driving Miss Daisy.’

Associate Professor of Theater and Fine Arts Division Coordinator, Deborah Liss-Green, sheds light on the journey the theater department undertook to make this production possible.

“We’ve been working on this since the end of August. Because, as you can see, I had an injury. I had an injury the day before we were supposed to open the show. And, as I fell, I was thinking [about] the show. I know my students were, I mean, yes, they were worried about me, but they were, I’m sure also worried about what would happen. Would we be able to do this show? So, we are at this point about to bring our rehearsals back. We were 98% ready to open. We were just putting the finishing touches on the set. Everything else was good to go. We’ve had an extra two weeks with these characters and to think about the issues in the play and to, you know, make sure our lines are fresh. Tonight, we are going to step back on the stage and get back into rehearsal. But we are so excited to bring this piece because we know that people are going to love it. We really do,” said Deborah Liss-Green, Associate Professor of Theatre and Fine Arts Division Coordinator.

“So, the production will be Thursday. I have to think of the dates, November the 30th at 7:30 p.m. And, then Saturday, December the 2nd at 7:30 p.m. in the evening and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. In the afternoon. So, a great thing to do would be like go have the wonderful brunch that we have here in our dining hall. We’re also doing a school matinee on Friday, December the 1st at 11 in the morning. We still have some space, about 75 seats left because I’m not charging the students, either anyone eighth grade or above, it would be perfectly appropriate for this show. You just come here because we don’t charge. I do not charge for our main stage productions. I have since I began here in 2016. I have wanted this space to be thought of by the community as their theater. And I don’t want cost to be any kind of an issue. I just want people to come and enjoy the work that we do here,” said Deborah Liss-Green, Associate Professor of Theatre and Fine Arts Division Coordinator.
