Americus 2 Duke’s BBQ fundraiser supports injured Albany firefighters

AMERICUS, Ga. – A $10 dollar plate for a great cause… That’s what’s happening in Americus, where local firefighters are stepping up to support fellow firefighters in need.

In late July, Albany firefighters Battalion Chief Ricky Thompson and Fire Captain Danny Hancock were hospitalized after a car accident while heading to support a colleague at his son’s funeral.

To offer support to the firefighters and their families, the Sumter County Firefighter Association has partnered with 2 Duke’s Barbeque to host a fundraiser. For $10, attendees can purchase a ticket for a BBQ plate of their choice.

We spoke with a SCFA board member about the significance of this fundraiser for both the association and the local community.

“We’re doing the barbecue fundraiser just to, kind of help them out. Some, medical bills and other expenses. They get, you know, they get pretty high on a toll. You know, nothing these days is what it cost, what it used to be. So, we’re trying to benefit them and do what we can to help them out. All profits from the ticket sales are going to them. We split between the two, ticket sales or for 2 Duke’s  Barbeque here in Americus on Tripp Street. So, that’s one of the main reasons that we formed the firefighters association here in Sumter county. Mainly at the time to help our fire department with any necessary equipment, supplies and things that they need. But, not only here, but no, firefighting is a brotherhood. We’re a family that is much like, you know, your families that you grow up with. But, we spent a third of our lives with these people, and they became family very quickly. And, it’s, you know, it’s not something that we take lightly,” said Hoyt Gurley, board member, SCFA.

Again, all proceeds from the fundraiser will be split between Thompson and Hancock.

Tickets can be purchased from 2 Duke’s BBQ at 500 Tripp Street in Americus. Pick up dates are scheduled in October.
