American Red Cross volunteers help family of eight after Albany fire

ALBANY, Ga. (October 9, 2025)— Wednesday afternoon, local American Red Cross volunteers from the Southwest Georgia Chapter responded to a multi-family fire on E. 2nd Avenue in Albany.

Red Cross volunteers as part of the Disaster Action Team were on the scene to help coordinate emergency aid to those affected. They assisted one family for a total of eight people, including six children.

The Red Cross provided comfort kits, direct client assistance and recovery planning to the families to meet their disaster-caused needs.

Every eight minutes, the Red Cross responds to a disaster in the community. That’s why the American Red Cross launched the nationwide Home Fire Campaign in 2014 which aims to reduce home fire deaths and injuries by 25 percent.

HOME FIRE CAMPAIGN SAVE LIVES Since October 2014, the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign with community partners has saved 2,489 lives – including 255 in Georgia – by educating families about fire safety, helping them create escape plans, and installing free smoke alarms in high-risk areas across the country.
