Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s “Grab a Friend and Vote” campaign
ALBANY, Ga. – With Election Day about to be in full swing, local funeral homes are working together with a local sorority to get people out to the polls Tuesday.
It’s part of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s “Grab a Friend and Vote” campaign.
They’re partnering with funeral homes like Poteat-Wakefield with the goal of getting people out to vote.
We spoke with Director, Jeffrey Wakefield late Monday afternoon about why he wanted to offer rides.
“Well, what they will do, they have some numbers that A.K.A’s have provided. Once they call those numbers, the A.K.A’s of course, will dispatch 1 to 3 funeral homes that are involved, myself and two others. And, we would go to the home or wherever the person is. We will pick them up, take them to the polls and return them back to their home or back to where they like to be dropped off at,” said Jeffrey Wakefield, Director, Poteat-Wakefield Funeral Home.
Another reason why they partnered with Alpha Kappa Alpha was the lack of another major voting event in the Good Life City…
Souls to the Polls.
“It’s very important. Anyone that wants to vote should have a way to get to the polls that needs to be able to go,” said to Wakefield.
And… people like Wakefield want to make sure that everyone can get out to vote…
Regardless of hurdles like disability, a lack of a vehicle, and avoiding using public transport.
“This is very important. This is an election, a historic election, and everyone who wants to vote, should have the right to be able to go and vote. And, we’re going to do all in our power to make sure that we get them there,” said Wakefield.
With polls opening early Tuesday morning, funeral homes like Poteat-Wakefield are encouraging people to call for availability to catch a shuttle to the polls.
