Albany Transportation dept. discusses severe weather plans
Clearing the roads...
ALBANY, Ga. – While the recent severe weather may have already moved out of our area, the Albany Transportation Department is making sure that the next time a storm blow through, they’re even more prepared.
Transportation director, David Hamilton says that safety is naturally the top priority when major storm sirens go off in the city.
“…Any changes to the weather and any changes to our schedule, that’s the first thing we want to do. Make people aware. Put out the press releases, be prepared, even as many days ahead of time as you can,” said David Hamilton, Transportation Director, City of Albany.
The Transportation Center which re-opened earlier in the year is sturdy on its own according to Hamilton…perfect if the need for a shelter-in-place situation happens again.
“Obviously, when we have passengers here, we do want to shelter them inside instead of out on the bus ramp. With this being a new facility, we haven’t added it to the shelter plan. That’s something I have to talk with the fire chief about and how he wanted to handle that,” he said.
And of course plans to get both transportation employees and passengers off the road is crucial when severe weather rolls in.
“I think we are ready in terms of storms. We’re prepared, we have a plan on where to put people. So, I think in terms of facility, we’re about as prepared as we can get. We do have a plan, even if we have to shelter-in-place. We’ll bring folks into our office area, and we’ll get them out of the hallways,” he said.
While there’s no predicting severe weather, the Albany Transportation Department is making sure in the next instance of severe weather, they can protect not only their employees, but the public riders as well.
