Albany Tech’s annual golf tournament honors Dr. Anthony O. Parker

ALBANY, Ga. – Albany Technical College hosted their annual golf tournament to benefit the students and programs at Albany Tech.

Come rain or shine, Albany Technical College always put on a show as they host the Dr. Anthony O. Parker golf tournament Tuesday morning at the River Point Golf Club.

This golf tournament honors the late Dr. Anthony Parker, who served as the president of Albany Technical College for 27 years.

Professional golfer, Jim Dent, also made an appearance as a special guest of the tournament. Mr. Dent reflects on his career and passion for golf.

“I found out that I liked the game. We couldn’t play it, like something you could do all the time. You can go do it, but with golf back in the days, down at the country club, we would play Mondays and Fridays. They let the caddies play Mondays and Fridays. So, that’s where I started in golf,” said Jim Dent, Golf player, Georgia Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

“I got it in my blood. So, I went to Atlantic City, New Jersey for three or four years. I worked there, stayed a couple summers and winters up there, then I went to California. Got lucky, met this guy, and he helped me. Golf has been a part of my life for ages. So, I enjoyed playing golf. Golf is something I enjoyed doing, shouldn’t have got paid for it, because I really enjoy playing the game,” said Dent.

Mr. Dent has played over 450 events and was inducted into the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame and the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.

“Well, you know that was one of the things that was a surprise to me. You know, you don’t think about nothing like that, but when it happened to me, it was a blessing in disguise. Someone was watching me besides myself,” said Mr. Dent.
