Albany Tech “Are You Man Enough to be in Healthcare?” panel discussion challenges stereotypes and inspires careers
ALBANY, Ga. – Albany Technical College (ATC) hosted its, “Are You Man Enough to be in Healthcare?” panel discussion for the third consecutive year.
This year’s event took place at the newly established Phoebe Lving and Learning Community, making the occasion all the more special.
“There is masculinity in healthcare. I learned the term that people consider male health care to be a pink collar profession. When you’re lying down and you’re sick and you’re recovering from something, the patient doesn’t care what gender you are. They just want to get better,” said Dr. Morris Clarington, Dean of Academic Affairs for Nursing & Allied Health.
Participants had the opportunity to join the panel for a tour of the Phoebe Living and Learning Community, as well as engage with panelists by asking questions and sharing their thoughts.
“Health care can look easy when you are the patient or you are someone who’s on the outside looking in. It can look like people are not doing anything. It is a lot of hard work that goes into most of the profession that we do and I know that I can speak well for radiology,” said Allen Grant, Jr., Clinical Coordinator for the Radiologic Technology.
The panel covered a range of topics related to men in healthcare, offering advice, sharing personal experiences, and addressing the challenges faced in the field.
“However, you have to carry yourself in a way where the patient is confident that you are going to be able to meet their needs, their expectations at that moment. When you show up, a lot of times a patient will have a face that says I am relieved because you’re here to assist me. And the pressure of being able to perform and the expectation that you can perform is always there,” said Kisean Huggins, Area Operations Director (Dialysis Clinic Incorporated)
