Albany State University to host ribbon-cutting ceremonies for new Early Learning Center & Residential Hall

ALBANY, Ga. – On August 27, 2025, Albany State University (ASU) will host ribbon-cutting ceremonies to celebrate the opening of two new buildings: the Portia Holmes Shields Early Learning Center and Residence Hall 7. The ceremony for the Early Learning Center will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the Residential Hall ceremony at 11 a.m. Both events will take place on the East Campus.

Portia Holmes Shields Early Learning Center

Named in honor of Dr. Portia Holmes Shields, ASU’s seventh and first female president, the Early Learning Center will offer safe and affordable childcare for the ASU campus and the broader Albany community. Strategically located near the Jones Brothers Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (HPER) Complex, it will also serve as a hands-on learning hub for students in education and health professions programs.

Residence Hall 7

The newly constructed 30,682-square-foot residential facility will provide housing for junior and senior honors students. Located near Residence Hall 6 on the East Campus, the building emphasizes long-term sustainability and fosters school spirit through intentional community-building design.
