Albany State University Student wins Top Presenter Award at National Biomedical Research Conference
ALBANY, Ga. – A special student at ASU is making waves on a national level, earning recognition in a prestigious biomedical research conference.
Albany State University (ASU) is celebrating a major accomplishment by one of its students. Amaya Williams, a Junior majoring in Chemistry with a minor in Biology, has been honored with the prestigious Top Presenter Award at the annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Williams, who attended the conference on a travel scholarship, was recognized for her standout poster presentation – selected as one off the best among more than 3,000 students nationwide.
Her research focuses on addressing critical health disparities in prostate cancer outcomes. The project, which she conducted during a year-long internship funded by the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta hosted at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, explores innovative strategies to improve cancer screening rates in underrepresented communities.
Williams credits her success to the mentorship she’s received from ASU’s Natural Science Department, which she says has been instrumental in her development as a researcher and professional.
Her achievement not only underscores her dedication to addressing health disparities in rural communities, but also highlights her potential as a rising leader in the biomedical field.
