Albany Recreation & Parks previews All-Star Basketball Game
ALBANY, Ga. – Attention, all hoopers and ballers. The Albany Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) is bringing the heat as they prepare to host their All-Star Basketball event.
Get ready to witness the ultimate hardwood showdown! But, this isn’t your typical basketball game… This matchup will feature 80 players and 120 cheerleaders. Students, selected by their coaches from various schools across south Georgia, including Americus, Mitchell county, Terrell county, and beyond, will be taking part in this exciting event.
“So, we have a weekend full of events. On Friday night, we will honor the kids at a banquet that will be at Monroe High School cafeteria at 6 p.m. And, we’re going to award those kids for the great season that they’ve had. And, then on Saturday, we will begin with a skills challenge beginning at 12 p.m. After the skills challenge we have a three point contest that will feature the kids in the All-Star game, followed by the elementary school girls game, the elementary school boys game, the middle school girls game. And, then the conclusion will be the middle school boys game. The All-Star cheerleaders will be a big improvement from last year. And, we had two elementary school squad cheerleaders. Now, we’re have an elementary school and middle school cheerleaders,” said Kayla Moore, ARPD Athletic Centers & Gyms Superintendent.
Kayla Moore, Superintendent of Athletic Centers & Gyms for the Albany Recreation & Parks Department (ARPD), emphasizes the significance of organizing events like this to encourage physical activity and foster the growth of children.
“One of the main things is, again, keep kids active. And, our motto is “rec-ing” the community. So that means we’re going to make sure we provide objects to highlight kids in all the positive things that they’re doing. A lot of times we hear all the negatives, and we want to highlight all the positive things, not only on the basketball court but outside the basketball court. A lot of our all-stars are A-B honor roll students. And, so, we want to support and make sure that the community knows that we have their backs and we want to highlight the positive things that the kids are doing,” said Moore.
The doors will open at 11 am on Saturday, April 27th, at Monroe High School. The Albany Recreation and Parks Department (ARPD) encourage residents to join them for a Saturday filled with fun.
“Come out in support. Support these young men and women. They’ve had tremendous seasons and a lot of times it’s only when they’re involved in things that are school related, but outside of school make sure you support those kids as well, just come out and support,” said Moore.
